Make Your Own Seashell Wrapping Paper

Do you have a roll of brown craft paper that you’re not sure what to do with because it’s not very decorative? You can turn it into chic and stylish wrapping paper in a few simple steps, and in this blog post I’ll show you how!

If you’d love to spruce up that roll of brown paper in your creative craft cupboard, here’s a tutorial to show you how. Hand-making wrapping paper might sound elaborate and time consuming but this step by step is simple and satisfying. I drew seashells onto a brown craft paper roll to create a nautical wrapping paper that I’m going to use for birthday gift wrapping. It would also look great for a new baby present, leaving gift or get well soon present too.

As Maria from the Sound of Music sang, what’s not to love about …’brown paper packaging tied up with string’…

You will need:

  • Brown craft paper roll

  • Large marker pen (I used a white chunky chalk pen and I’m really pleased with how it came out)

  • Brown paper tape for gift wrapping

  • Ribbon to decorate the gift

  • Flower sprig optional (I used dried limonium)

STEP 1

Start by rolling out your brown paper so you’ve got enough to cover the gift you’re going to wrap. You can also roll out more than you need and batch make your wrapping paper for future wrapping if you have time to.

STEP 2

On a piece of scrap paper or a small piece of the brown craft paper have a practice drawing your shell shapes, before you go ahead with decorating the whole roll. Below, I’ve shown you how I drew out the seashell and fossil shapes for my wrapping paper design. Try these ones or have a go at creating your own doodles.

STEP 3

Now you’ve practiced, draw, doodle and illustrate all over the brown craft paper in front of you. Vary the sizes of the shells you draw to make the wrapping paper look more fancy. Remember to mix up the different shells and fossils you draw out so there aren’t too many of the same variety all bunched up together.

STEP 4

Let your drawings dry off, especially if you used a particularly inky pen. Then wrap your gift, tie with a pretty ribbon and slip a little flower under the ribbon for an extra special touch. I used some sprigs of dried limonium flowers because they’re typically found growing near the coast so they add to that stylish beachy look.

When you’re drawing your wrapping paper, you could use different coloured pens, and have a go at different little sketches for different occasions. For Christmas wrapping you could draw lots of mistletoe, mini presents or Christmas puddings. Have fun doodling your own homemade wrapping paper and tag me in your designs on Instagram @WebbandFarrer I’d love to see what you make!
